Long Run Seep State Nature Preserve

Looking for a new place to activate Parks-on-the-Air in the Northern Illinois Area? Long Run Seep is a 85-acre natural area located north of the town of Lockport in Will County. It was dedicated as a preserve under the Illinois Department of Natural Resources in April, 1990.

In part, it is prized for containing two Illinois threatened plant species as well as fen and seep characteristics which are rare and unique natural communities.  Long Run Seep occupies a portion of the upland, bluffs and floodplain of the Des Plaines River Valley. The upland is dissected by two streams, Long Run at the north and an unnamed small stream at the south.

The topography varies from 650 feet to 585 feet above sea level. The upland portion along High Road is fairly level and suitable for POTA activities whereas the bluff dropping down to the Des Plaines River valley is quite steep with a 50-foot drop in elevation.

Area soil, surface water, aquatic life and wildlife were impacted when a nearby AGO, West Shore Pipe Line  pumping station released 15,000 gallons of fuel oil into the environment on March 25, 1999.

Long Run Seep State Nature Preserve was added as a Parks-on-the-Air entity on June 19, 2024. For activation, consider the section East of High Road and North of 143rd Street. Boundary signs are posted along these roads.
